I feel privileged to uphold Marshall’s noble endeavour to provide access for our fellow Carpathians to the records that have heretofore remained scattered and difficult to retrieve. These data will hopefully become a treasure trove for researching our family trees, rediscovering the world of our ancestors and handing down our values to our children and grandchildren.

I am amazed how someone not born in Sub-Carpathia Ukraine, yet with ancestors from there, has taken on a personal quest to seek out and document all the long-forgotten cemeteries in Sub-Carpathia, and now has taken on the incredible Herculean task of unearthing the vital and other records of our ancestors, many of whom perished in the Holocaust. Marshall's personal effort to visit the cities, towns and villages in Sub-Carpathia (all 631 of them!) is unparalleled by any other person or organization. All Hungarian Jews are deeply grateful and indebted to you for your extraordinary mitzvah of helping preserve our Jewish heritage for generations to come.

The prophet Isaiah calls and asks the people of Israel to look at their burning ... Do not forget your roots and always be connected to the golden chain of our people that begins from Abraham and peace be upon them. The terrible holocaust and the period of Russian communism almost succeeded in severing this chain of generations if it were not for the mercy of the blessed G-d who created a remnant and a refugee for his people in Israel. Although the trauma of the Holocaust left a great void in thousands of Jewish families and caused them to disengage spiritually from the people of Israel. We are happy that our peoples have Jews like Mr. Marshall Katz, who understood the great void that has been created for many years, and is giving all his energies to connect our generation with the wonderful generations that preceded us, whether or not those who were annihilated in the Shoah. But there are also tens of thousands of our forefathers who are buried in Sub-Carpathia before the Holocaust, but most of them are neglected because most of their descendants have become extinct, and others are neglected because their offspring do not know how and where to look to find and make a connection. Here comes the dear Mr. Katz, a man who has not been through simple Sisyphean work, on hundreds of cemeteries in Sub-Carpathia and photographed tens of thousands of tombstones that remained in existence and thanks to which, grandchildren and relatives can reconnect to the amazing and unique chain of generations of the Jewish people. Dear Marshall!  It is too short to write about all the great rights you are concerned with.  We can only wish you the right to this longevity and health and landed to a hundred and gates a year of joy and expansion.

Marshall asked me to Beta-test his pre-launch website which will ultimately and definitively fill the gaping hole in Sub-Carpathia research. At last, Sub-Carpathia Genealogy® will be the go-to website for virtually everything the researcher needs to fill the gaps on their family tree: vital records, census records, cemetery records and photos, military records and Holocaust records spanning from as early as the 1700's up to 1944—when our Sub-Carpathian families were nearly annihilated in the Shoah. In the course of Beta-testing, I found more than 200 never-before-seen vital records—images of which revealed exact dates of birth, dates of marriage, dates of death, etc.—that have enriched my family tree immeasurably, by creating timelines (and, most imporantly, yahrzeits) for countless relatives who had previously been only names bearing question marks on a tree. I am sure you will be as successful as I have in finding the information unavailable to you for so long and for which you have so impatiently waited.

Congratulations to Marshall—and his anonymous donors and dedicated team of paid expert transcribers—for his Herculean project of reclaiming our history, our heritage, our pedigree after so many years in obscurity.

I first met Marshall Katz a few years ago, online, when I was searching vital records of my parents and their ancestors who were all born in the Sub-Carpathian region of Ukraine. He was a great help to me in unlocking invaluable information about my family history. Members of my mother's family, for the most part, were lost in the Shoah and I had very limited details about her Hungarian family. Thanks to Marshall, I now have detailed information on her family dating back to the early 1700's. He had found the abandoned Jewish Cemetery in my mother's hometown and while photographing the grave stones, he found my mother's sister's stone. She died in 1940 and I was able to visit the grave recently, thanks to him. Most people do not know of what challenges Marshall faced while locating the old and sometimes abandoned cemeteries. In one case, he was forced to use a zip line to cross a river in order to gain entry to an old, secluded and abandoned cemetery. His untiring efforts in photographing grave stones and copying a large number of Sub-Carpathian genealogical records, will be a vital assistance to all genealogical researchers, professional and amateur. His newly developed website has been a great help to me. I thank him for all he has done to promote genealogical research.
