Introduction

Welcome Sub-Carpathia researcher to your comprehensive website for Jewish family research

Whether you’re a novice or an experienced researcher, we’ve got a treasure trove of records for you to freely search.

We hope the records, tombstone images and other items of genealogical significance found on this website will help you to fill the gaps in your family tree with those who perished in the Holocaust and should never be forgotten.

Sub-Carpathia Genealogy®, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation—founded for people with Jewish roots in the villages and towns located in Sub-Carpathia Ukraine today that were formerly located in:

  • parts of the pre-1918 Hungarian megyék (counties) of Bereg, Máramaros, Ugocsa and Ung.
  • the 1918-1938 Czechoslovak territory of Podkarpatská Rus' (Subcarpathia Ruthenia).
  • the Republic of Carpatho-Ukraine which declared its autonomy in March 1938, lasting briefly.
  • Hungary, after annexing Carpathian Ruthenia, in 1938, as a result of the Munich Agreement, lasting until 1945.
  • The Soviet Union and subsequent Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, after World War II, as a result of the Yalta Treaty signed by Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin as Transcarpathia.
  • In 1991, Transcarpathia became Sub-Carpathia in newly independent Ukraine.

NOTE: We are often asked "Why is this area called Sub-Carpathia rather than Transcarpathia, as we remember it?"

Transcarpathia is a translation of "Закарпатська/Zakarpatt'ska" in Ukrainian, i.e., over the Carpathian Mountain range. Russians and Ukrainians use this terminology as they see this area.

In Hungarian "Kárpátalja" translates as Sub-Carpathia or "foot of the mountains," after its geographic location below the Carpathian Mountain range; hence, the region is called Sub-Carpathia by Poles, Slovaks, Hungarians and Romanians.

For consistency, our website uses Sub-Carpathia.

  • Incredible Job: "Incredible job on the database!! I'm finding lots of cousins."

    Thank you, Steve Zivin, USA

  • After 30 Years: "Such exciting news and a beautifully designed website. I recently purchased a handful of the transcripts from the newly released Sub-Carpathia Genealogy website, and have successfully located the marriage record for my paternal great-grandparents, as well as the birth record for their oldest child and sister to my grandfather. With a surname of "Moskovics" and Uzhorod as the only information initially provided, it has taken me over thirty years to finally have a specific birth/residence location for my great-grandmother, Regina (Rezsin) Moskovics Guttmann - sooooo excited!!!!! Furthermore, I have her parents' names, as well!!!!!"

With great appreciation, Cheryl Etting, USA

  • In Appreciation: "Thank you very much for your Hungarian research to help me to add missing information to my non-Jewish family tree & family history so quickly. I wish you all the best in your further research efforts for other non-Jews."

    Best, Steve Epstein, USA

  • With Appreciation: "You have sent me records which have helped me so much in my research. The records gave me the documentation needed to prove my 2X great grandmother was the sister of a man who lived in her same small town in the United States. I have been in touch with his descendants and know we are cousins! I can't express how much I appreciate your research and assistance as well as how quickly you have been responding to my requests."

    Thank you, Faye Phillips, USA

  • Very Appreciative: "I am very appreciative for your kindness and help, you have no idea the flood of emotions that I experienced when I received the record of my mother's birth, a Holocaust survivor. I am gratified and honored to participate in promoting the website and the services you offer."

    Thank you, Joanne Lee, USA

  • Wonderful Job: "You guys did a wonderful job!!!"

    Thanks!!!, Jona Schellekens, Israel

  • Expedited Reply: "Thank you so much for your expedited reply.  The records mean much to me as Izak REINHARCZ was my great-great grandfather and Bernat (Beresh, Berko) LIPSITZ was my great-grandfather and Mozses a great uncle.  My relatives lived in and around Holubina, Paskocz, Also Vericke and Svalaya for more than 100 years, so to have the documentation of their births and deaths are helping my family expand our heritage.  I have but one photo of my great grandmother, Jennie (Scheindel) BERNSTEIN who resided in Holubina, but while I have a birth record of her, am still searching for a gravestone marker or a death certificate, which has been elusive so far.  But it is entirely possible that her grave may be one of the illegible ones you photographed or possibly destroyed by German soldiers during WWII.  Nonetheless, your extra-ordinary work in documenting this history is greatly appreciated."

    Thank you, Herman Gilman, USA

  • After 30+ Years: "My father spent 30+ years trying to trace his family without the benefit of these databases or on-line technology - and could never find any proof that they ever even existed. He passed 4.5 years ago...a year later I started finding records of his family??. Armed with their Yiddish names and place of birth, I have been able to bring many of them to life. I'd like to think that somewhere, out in whatever passes for the afterlife/Heaven, he is at peace knowing they now have a 'voice'.!"

    Thank you!!, Alan Friedman, USA

  • Great Website: "This is a great website that you have put together for this region. Using the site, I found rather quickly three vital records for relatives of mine which I did not have previously. I much appreciate having this new resource."

    Thank you, Ivett Takacs, Hungary

  • An Issue Is Settled:: "Thank you for connecting me to this site. You have now settled an issue for my family with respect to birthdates, since there were 2 brothers and 4 sisters. The sisters all went to Auschwitz and survived, but they feared the oldest was too old so they moved all their ages down by 5-7 years. My mother told me this in 2000, had always kept it hidden out of fear she would be deported for lying on the papers. However, none of her siblings ever told the kids, and they all thought I was crazy (or perhaps my mother was). Now it has clarified it."

    Sincerely, Rosalinda Wenby, USA

  • Fascinating Information: "Thank you so much for the fascinating information you have provided us with!"

Thank you again, Yissochor Marmorstein, England

  • Opened Doors: "First of all... just wanted to let you know that I have been enjoying the transcripts thoroughly and that they have opened up new information for previously "closed doors" as far as my paternal great-great grandparents!"

Thank you again, Cheryl Ettig, USA

  • Extremely Useful: "Thanks for this website it is extremely useful, I have appreciated you work on kehilalinks for years, it has helped me find many ancestors and their resting place. Doing for people gone by, is considered a "Chesed shel Emes", may God repay you for all you are doing."

Thank you again, Schmiel Ekstein, USA

I have shared this site with my family tree and I'm sure we will be making donations to support your efforts as we develop our family tree! You are doing such a Mitzvah for those of us still seeking our past."

Thank you again, Susan B. Fried, USA

  • Documented Proof: "By getting records from you, I now have documented proof that my mom’s parents were 2nd cousins. The last evidence came from identifying the person who reported my 3rd great grandfather’s death and his relationship to the deceased. Without seeing that actual document and paying attention to the reporting person I don’t think I could have positively made the link."

    Thank you, Mark Resnicoff, USA

  • Amazing!: "Amazing! I’ve been looking for my great grandfathers date of death for 25 years."

    Thank you, Roberta Solit, USA

  • Truly Exciting: "This record appears to be for the marriage of his (my father's) parents, my grandparents. And it is truly exciting for me to have this (record)."

  • Incredibly thankful : "IWe are so incredibly thankful that you had our relative’s birth record on your website in the first place. That was unbelievable, and then to further be able to get an Apostille (for citizenshi)p) is just amazing given the circumstances of the terrible war.
